FERA Tech Bulletin Edition 03

Yearling cattle arriving at the feedlot are exposed to significant stressors including transportation, processing, and reimplantation, which, even in low disease risk animals, can negatively impact feed intake, growth performance, and carcass quality. FerAppease, formulated with the Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance (mBAS®), has been scientifically proven to mitigate physiological stress responses, enhance feed intake, improve weight gain, and support better carcass outcomes.

Four independent studies evaluated the effects of FerAppease (Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance) on dairy cattle health and productivity across key life stages, including freshening cows and heifers, dry-off, and preweaning calves. Conducted at multiple universities, the research demonstrated that FerAppease use is associated with a reduction in fresh cow diseases, improved milk production, better parlor behavior in fresh heifers, enhanced rumination and reduced culling in dry cows, and decreased incidence of diarrhea and mortality in calves.

Procedures such as castration and dehorning are often necessary in cattle management, but they come at a cost—to both producers and their cattle. Stress and pain from these events can have lasting effects on health, performance, and overall productivity. By using FerAppease at the time of the procedure, producers can directly reduce stress and support faster recovery, ensuring their cattle stay healthier and continue gaining. Backed by science, FerAppease gives veterinarians and producers confidence that they are doing right by their cattle and their businesses—enhancing both welfare and performance.
